Abstract

This article focuses on hesitation and turn-taking as two important features of spoken communication. Hesitation markers help speakers think, choose appropriate words and control the pace of their speech, while turn-taking shows how people manage the exchange of speaking roles in a conversation. These phenomena are described from linguistic, psychological and pragmatic perspectives, demonstrating how they support clarity, coherence and cooperation between speakers. The article also highlights how hesitation and turn-taking appear in different cultural contexts and how they change in digital communication.
