Abstract

This article examines the linguistic concept of meaning and analyzes its principal types. In modern linguistics, meaning is understood as a complex category that links language with thought, communication, and social practice. The paper considers lexical and grammatical meaning, denotative and connotative meaning, as well as the distinction between semantic and pragmatic meaning. Special attention is also given to the notions of sense and reference, which help explain how linguistic units relate to objects of the world and to speakers’ mental representations. The article argues that meaning should be studied as a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by vocabulary, grammar, context, and communicative intention. The results of the study may be useful for linguistics, translation, lexicography, and foreign language teaching.
