Abstract
Discourse constitutes a fundamental construct in linguistics and the social sciences, referring to language use beyond isolated sentences and encompassing the interaction between text, context, and social practice. This article provides an analytical overview of discourse by examining its linguistic, social, and pedagogical dimensions. Drawing on established theoretical perspectives, the discussion highlights how discourse operates as a medium for meaning-making, identity construction, and the reproduction of power relations. The paper also underscores the importance of discourse competence in language education. By integrating insights from discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, this article demonstrates that discourse is not merely a vehicle for communication but a dynamic and socially embedded phenomenon.
